About The Artist
Using experiences and memories from a lifetime living and working in and around Nashville, John Denton uses oil paint and vivid colors to reimagine the familiar: Biblical stories, church hymns, religious icons, Nashville streets, local landmarks, holiday scenes, rural landscapes, and machinery. His paintings translate conventional stories into modern and compelling retellings. Whether it is a painting of a Nativity scene in the middle of a busy Nashville Street; the Annunciation delivered by an angel in a suit; Adam and Eve in modern dress fleeing Eden; or, a rural 7 Up billboard, the result is to invite us to reframe the familiar in new and transformative ways.
John Denton received a BFA in 1978 from Middle Tennessee State University in painting, drawing and printmaking. He has a painting in the Nashville Century III art collection at The Parthenon.
His work is done on oil paintings, mostly pieces of plywood less than 12 inches square.
